HARRISONBURG — The furniture has the look of a bygone era.

A dining-room hutch of solid oak, cedar chests, rolltop desks and tables of solid hardwoods give the store the look of an antique shop. But the furniture is new.

“These are tomorrow’s antiques,” said Brandon Amstutz, 28, owner of Downtown Fine Furniture Co.

Located at 20 N. Main St., the store is scheduled to open Sept. 4 with a $500,000 inventory of handcrafted Amish furniture, Amstutz said.

“The furniture is made in 12 small shops scattered around Wayne and Holmes counties in Ohio,” Amstutz said. “They’re local craftsmen, sometimes just three or four people in a shop.”

Amstutz and his wife, Laura, both Mennonites, moved to Harrisonburg from Ohio four years ago. Laura is a graduate of Eastern Mennonite Seminary.

Entrepreneur At Heart

The idea to open a furniture store began as an off-the-cuff remark last Christmas.

“We were driving around to furniture stores in Ohio looking for a small dresser for our guest bedroom,” Laura said. “And I said, ‘We should open an Amish furniture store in Harrisonburg.’”

Amstutz respects the Amish and likes their old-fashioned approach — doing business with a handshake. He also admires the quality of their work.

“They don’t cut corners,” he said. “They make furniture that is solid and meant to last.”

Amstutz has seven years experience in auto sales. He owned a shaved-ice business as a teenager and calls himself an entrepreneur at heart.

“While I’ve been working for someone, I’ve been trying to stir up something in my head,” he said. “It’s important for me to feel good about what I’m selling, and I feel good about this.”

Downtown Fit

Amstutz located his store downtown for several reasons, including lower rent and the “feel of downtown.”

He’s paying $3 a square foot, as opposed to leases that are five times as expensive in the city’s eastern retail corridor, he said.

And the building has history. It dates to the 1910s, according to the National Register of Historic Places.

Tenants included J.C. Penney, F.W. Woolworth and Valley Books.

A furniture store like the one Amstutz is launching fits the mold of successful downtown businesses, said Eddie Bumbaugh, executive director of Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance.

“Locally owned specialty stores tend to be most successful in downtown settings,” Bumbaugh said.

Amstutz also likes the direction that downtown is taking, with community events like First Night and Valley Fourth.

“Downtown has history and the product I’m offering has history,” Amstutz said. “This seems like a perfect fit to me.”

Yesterday, I decided to go for a short stroll in downtown Harrisonburg.

My first stop was Clementine, a new restaurant in an old building across from the Library. I wanted to drink in the artsy décor that had been described to me, and I was not disappointed. There is an attractive entryway to keep out street noises and weather. I was greeted warmly as I stepped inside. It was interesting to see how the original brickwork was preserved along with additional wall decoration. Downstairs there is a large lounge, which is available for private and public events, and it is equipped for showing films. I left Clementine with a strong desire to return to try out the food.

I walked on up the street past all kinds of inviting eating places and shops. After passing The Children's Museum I came to my next stop - a new furniture store called "Downtown Fine Furniture." I could have stayed in there for an hour or more, enjoying the beautifully crafted furniture made by Amish artisans in Ohio.

Much effort is being put into making downtown Harrisonburg an attractive place to eat, live, visit and shop.
