Beginnings

When Laura and Brandon Amstutz bought their first home in Harrisonburg they began dreaming of furnishing it with the beautiful wood furniture they had come to appreciate while living in Ohio. They soon realized the unique possibilities they took for granted were not readily available in their adopted home town. “We need to open a store in Virginia,” one of them said.

Brandon, who owned and operated a successful sno-cone business as a franchisee starting in sixth grade, has always nurtured entrepreneurial vision, so it's no surprise that he immediately began dreaming and planning. Downtown Fine Furniture Company was born a few months later. Laura works at a local university and assists with sales and marketing while other family members have pitched in during the past three years to contribute their unique skills to this family-owned and operated business that quickly has become an important destination in downtown Harrisonburg.

Located on Court Square, the showroom sits in the heart of its local community. Yet through the Internet, tourism, and contacts made through Harrisonburg's two university communities, Downtown Fine Furniture Company draws customers from nearby cities and the greater Washington D.C. Area. The store can ship their products anywhere in the U.S. In the first two years of operation they've sold and delivered their products to states as far away as Texas and California.

Quality

Drive down the streets of any town in the USA on trash collection day and you will see the remains of cheap, poorly constructed furniture often made on other continents by people barely making a living wage while being exposed to toxic chemicals. Globally, forests are being destroyed to provide a cheap supply of “wood” which is often a combination of chemicals and sawdust held together with plastic. The use of synthetics and veneers has become standard. The result is furniture with a short lifespan that quickly ends up in landfills in our own country.

We are located in Downtown Harrisonburg because we believe that community is important. We support many community functions.
